Joss Whedon's big-screen incarnation of his short-lived TV series "Firefly" gets the deluxe treatment. The lively, humor-laden science fiction Western stars Nathan Fillion as the former rebel soldier turned smuggler with Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher and Summer Glau (as a spacey psychic hunted by ruthless agent Chiwetel Ejiofor) as his crew. Morena Baccarin and Ron Glass also return from the TV show, and David Krumholtz "guest stars." Whedon's years in TV helped him hone a clean, efficient, entertaining style grounded in character, camaraderie and his trademark dialogue -- a smarter version of the clichéd action movie barrage of wisecracks under fire, laden in personality and enriched with evocative Western colloquialisms of a frontier culture. The new two-disc edition features the original supplements of the earlier DVD release -- commentary by writer/director Whedon, Whedon's filmed introduction to the work-in-progress shown in advance screenings, deleted scenes, outtakes, and two featurettes -- along with a new commentary track featuring Whedon with stars Fillion, Baldwin, Glau and Glass, all revisiting the film after three years. Also new to the disc are the easy-going 20-minute featurette "A Filmmaker's Journey" (which makes the set look like a marvelous place to be), weird footage of the spacey psychic's interrogation scenes, a four-minute "Take a Walk on Serenity" tour, and the complete "Fruity Oaty Bars" animated commercial. Comes in a fold-out digipak.
