Seraphim Falls

 Liam Neeson is Carver, a former Confederate colonel who relentlessly stalks Gideon (Pierce Brosnan), a one-time Union captain, through the harsh wilderness and snow-covered mountains of the rugged American West in this callous revenge Western. It's more than simple rivalry that drives the obsessive Carver, but the reasons are not as compelling as the animalistic hunt and elemental flight through the unforgiving landscape. David Von Ancken's direction is best when he takes the motivations for granted and simply pits stalker against stalked in the battle for survival. The vivid environment and intensely driven figures recall the hard, tough-minded Westerns of the '70s, though the climax steps out of the natural world and into symbolic territory for a bargain with the devil (in the irresistible guise of Anjelica Huston). Also stars Michael Wincott, Ed Lauter and Angie Harmon.
