R,1hr 43min Released: January 1, 1987 Director: Distributor: MGM Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Paul Verhoeven's corporate "Frankenstein" story stars Peter Weller as a cop killed by a sadistic drug dealer (Kurtwood Smith) and revived as a walking cyborg tank with a really big gun: the latest addition to the newly privatized police force. Behind the black comedy and explicit violence is a sci-fi satire that posits big business running city services like a factory, complete with downsizing and cost cutting. Mean spirited and ultraviolent, Verhoeven's stylish satire manages to be funny and intelligent amidst the carnage. Nancy Allen, Daniel O'Herlihy and Miguel Ferrer co-star. There have been a number of DVD releases already. This two-disc edition comes in a full metal jacket of a case and features both the theatrical R-rated edition (with the previously available commentary by director Verhoeven and co-writer Ed Neumeier and others) and the complete unrated cut, along with the previously released 36-minute featurette "Flesh and Steel: The Making of RoboCop," two archival featurettes from 1987, storyboards, and deleted scenes. The second disc includes the new featurettes "Villains of Old Detroit," "Special Effects: Then and Now," and "RoboCop: Creating a Legend." | ||||||||||||||
