R,1hr 15min Genre: Release: 2007 Directors: Distributor: Odeon Sky Filmworks Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies The ingenious and ferociously effective "[REC]" arises from the same fertile ground as "The Blair Witch Project" and "Diary of the Dead." Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, rising stars in the Spanish horror scene, use the first-person camera of a TV crew to take us along on a routine firefighter call, where we're suddenly quarantined in an apartment building by ominously unseen authorities while a viral infection turns the inhabitants into (for lack of a more accurate medical term) feral zombies. The real-time style of raw footage shot on the fly in the claustrophobic environs creates a new urgency in a familiar premise. It was remade in the United States as "Quarantine." In Spanish with English subtitles and an optional English dub soundtrack, with an 18-minute Spanish-language making-of featurette. | ||||||||||||||
