David Twohy's remarkably effective sci-fi thriller, about the survivors of a spaceship crash fending off savage nocturnal predators, is pure pulp fun, and it made a star of Vin Diesel, who went on to headline the big-budget summer sequel "The Chronicles of Riddick," in which his interstellar wanted man lands in the battle royale between evil incarnate and the last stand of humanity (led by grand old actress Dame Judi Dench).
