G,1hr 28min Released: June 19, 1998 Directors: Distributor: Buena Vista Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Disney turned its eyes eastward for the 1998 animated adventure "Mulan," drawing upon the classic Chinese legend of a girl who rejects the constraints placed upon her, masquerades as a boy to take her father's place in the army, and becomes a hero. This was produced near the end of Disney's reign of hand-drawn animated features, and it's one of the company's loveliest of that twilight era. Ming-Na Wen voices the heroine, Mulan; B.D. Wong gives voice to her commander Shang (with whom she falls in love); and Eddie Murphy brings comic relief as a pint-sized dragon with a nonstop mouth. Ming-Na and Wong return to voice their characters in the 2004 direct-to-video sequel "Mulan II," which sends the female warrior Mulan and General Shang on a new mission, escorting three princesses (voiced by Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh and Lauren Tom) to a distant city. The two-disc special edition of "Mulan" features commentary by directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, six deleted scenes (shown in rough, unfinished form) and a deleted song, numerous featurettes and other supplements. "Mulan II" features deleted scenes and a couple of featurettes. | ||||||||||||||
