Dustin Hoffman is Mr. Magorium, the eccentric 243-year-old proprietor of the magical toy store that carries his name, and Natalie Portman is the reluctant young manager he hopes will take over his legacy as he prepares to retire. Her crisis in self-confidence is the least of her problems: The living store throws a tantrum to protest Magorium's retirement. "Genial and G-rated, this fantasy from screenwriter/first-time director Zach Helm sprinkles in charming moments but ultimately doesn't evoke enough wonderment to overcome its tongue-twisting title and completely win over adults along with kids," writes Variety critic Brian Lowry. Jason Bateman co-stars as an accountant whose sense of wonder is rekindled, and Zach Mills is the most loyal customer, a boy in tune with the store's magical heartbeat. The accompanying toy box of extras contains the brief featurettes "Strangely Weird and Weirdly Strange: The Magical World of a Wonder Emporium," "An Eccentric Boss and an Awkward Apprentice," "To Meet Eric Applebaum, Start by Saying Hi" and "The Magical Toy Store" (each less than 10 minutes) and the two-minute behind-the-scenes "Fun on the Set" montage. | |||||||||||||||
