PG13,1hr 53min Released: April 4, 2008 Director: Distributor: Universal Pictures Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies George Clooney turns football into screwball in this comedy of a barnstorming football team trying to make a go of it in the freewheeling pre-pro days of the 1920s. As star of the film, Clooney contributes double takes and bug-eyed faces, and as director he hits the jokes with the timing of an old style comedy. But it lacks the flair and the devil-may-care energy of its classic comedy inspirations. Renée Zellweger is the sassy love interest, John Krasinski is the young gridiron prodigy and sports star, and Jonathan Pryce and Stephen Root co-star. The DVD features commentary by Clooney and producer Grant Heslov, along with deleted scenes and a bunch of featurettes. I didn't get the DVD so I didn't get a chance to see them, because the Blu-ray (which I did get) only has the commentary and a picture-in-picture viewing mode with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. There's surely some overlap, but, quite frankly, I wish Universal would quit shorting the Blu-ray discs, especially of the deleted scenes. | ||||||||||||||
