![]() PG13,2hrs 2min Genre: Released: May 22, 2008 Director: Distributor: Paramount Pictures Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Is Henry "Indiana" Jones too old for this s---? The first "Indiana Jones" film in two decades is a globe-trotting adventure set in the '50s, and Indy (Harrison Ford) is yanked into a Soviet plot (the Red Menace takes the place of the Nazis as the evil nemesis) to break into Area 51 (yes, we get a glimpse of the Ark of the Covenant in the warehouse of weird treasures) and chases it to South America, accompanied by a smart-alecky biker called Mutt (Shia LaBeouf). It's a jungle romp with an extraterrestrial twist (they could have called it "Indiana Jones and the Chariots of the Gods") and a romantic revisit with old flame Marion (Karen Allen). LaBeouf plays his part as a teen rebel who's seen "The Wild One" a few too many times, and Cate Blanchett has a ball as the German mystic turned Soviet paranormal researcher chasing an extraterrestrial holy grail. And it's cool that Ford plays his age and the film has the good sense to reference it, but for all the furious activity, it doesn't prevent the film from feeling a little tired, a little out of breath, a little bit of a rerun. The special edition is packed with the usual behind-the-scenes featurettes, produced by the always reliable Laurent Bouzereau. If you're looking for an overview, the 80-minute "Production Diary: Making Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" takes you from Day 1 of principal photography to the final wrap, while a collection of featurettes fills in other key aspects, such as "Iconic Props," "The Effects of Indy" and "Adventure in Post Production," to cite the most substantial. And of course there are galleries of production art, special effects and creature designs and production stills, plus animated "Pre-Visualization Sequences" (animated storyboards) for three scenes. Exclusive to the Blu-ray edition is a set of "Timelines" of production, history and story elements, essentially single-page files with brief notes, all linked to related timeline pages to connect story points, historical inspiration and production notes.
