![]() R,1hr 50min Released: March 20, 2009 Director: Distributor: Dreamworks/Paramount Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Paul Rudd is a sweet guy devoted to his adorable fiancée (Rashida Jones), but he has no close male friends and has never really mastered the art of guy talk (watching him stumble over nicknames and wordplay is painfully funny). Jason Segel is his new best friend, a strange but sincere guy whose confidence, openness and social ease is very attractive to the socially awkward Rudd. The unspoken foundation of films like "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" is male friendship. "I Love You, Man" frames it in the language of a romantic comedy (from awkward meeting to breakup) but never takes it for granted. Call it bromance, if you must, but it's a very funny look at what friendship means and how it works. Check out the 22-minute collection of "Extras," unused (and often hilarious) improvisations by the stars and the supporting cast from key scenes. Improvisational comedies lend themselves to this kind of supplement, and there's plenty more like it on both the DVD and Blu-ray editions: six extended scenes, three deleted scenes (rugby date, gay bowling night with the brother, and wedding pictures with the groomsmen) and an 11-minute gag reel of crackups, flubbed lines and other goofs. Director John Hamburg and actors Rudd and Segel provide an amiable if unfocused commentary track. Hamburg stays on point to discuss the scenes while Rudd fills in with the color commentary and behind-the-scenes stories and Segel interjects with off-the-wall comments and cracks. There's also the usual making-of featurette, and exclusive to the Blu-ray is the "red band" (aka R-rated) movie trailer. | ||
