DVD Review

Let me state one thing up front: While this stoner comedy sequel indeed drops buddies Harold Lee (John Cho) and Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) into the chaos of Guantanamo Bay, don't mistake it for political satire ... even if the portrait of terrorism hysteria and governmental incompetence does add an absurd slant to the political rhetoric. This is pure farce, a crazy comic adventure that sends the stoner buddies on a getaway road movie through a raunchy obstacle course of ethnic profiling, inbred rednecks, deluded super-patriots, a rampaging Neil Patrick Harris, and copious amounts of female nudity. It's available in separate wide-screen and full-screen editions with no supplements, and in "Unrated 2-Disc Special Edition" and Blu-ray releases, which both feature extended versions of the film as well as the interactive "Dude, Change the Movie" feature. Not quite "Choose Your Own Adventure," it simply allows the viewer to switch out one set of gags for another and then continues on as usual. These releases also feature two commentary tracks with the creators and cast (according to Cho, "About 70 percent of what we say is not actually true"), close to 20 minutes of deleted scenes, a bonus digital copy that can be downloaded to a PC, iPod or other compatible player, and the featurette "The World of Harold and Kumar," where the director proclaims Harold and Kumar as the odd couple of their generation.
