PG,1hr 55min Released: July 20, 2007 Director: Distributor: New Line Cinema Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies John Waters' only PG movie, the definitive comedy about the '60s, racism, integration and rock 'n' roll, was transformed into a hit Broadway musical. Now the story makes it back to the big screen in a big, colorful production starring John Travolta (under pounds of jiggling latex) as Edna Turnblad (the part created by cult drag queen Divine) and newcomer Nikki Blonsky as the irrepressible Tracy Turnblad, her cherry bomb of a daughter who just wants to dance on the local teen music show. The bouncy songs and energetic production place this somewhere between "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Dreamgirls," and Adam Shankman blends his choreography into his direction and rides the energy into the best production he's ever directed. To borrow a phrase from Waters' original movie, it's got a good beat and you can dance to it. The top-flight cast includes a catty Michelle Pfeiffer, a low-key Christopher Walken, a charmingly self-absorbed James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Allison Janney, and (as the teens) Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron and Elijah Kelley. The single-disc edition features no supplements but the "Two-Disc Shake and Shimmy Edition" features a pair of documentaries that follow the story from the Baltimore '60s TV dance show that inspired Waters through his original film, the Broadway musical, and the new screen adaptation; two commentary tracks (Shankman and Blonsky deliver the chattiest, giggliest, liveliest commentary I've heard in a long time); nine minutes of deleted and alternate scenes (including a musical number deleted from the show); plus sing-along subtitles, dance instructions and other goodies. Also available in Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. | ||||||||||||||
