Good Luck Chuck

Luck is a matter of perspective in this raunchy sex comedy about a dentist (comedian Dane Cook) with commitment issues and a curse that results in every woman he sleeps with finding true love ... in the very next guy she meets. That gets him a lot of quick romps (and the audience an eyeful of gyrating female flesh) but little fulfillment, and when he falls for a gorgeous walking disaster played by Jessica Alba it just gets worse. He doesn't dare sleep with his adorable new sweetie, who takes care of the penguins at the local aquarium, for fear of sending her off to her soul mate. It's all pretty lewd and crude, with excess and exposure and grotesque fat gags passing for humor. Alba is no physical comedian, and director Mark Helfrich does her no favors in staging her intermittent klutz gags, which come and go like the tides. Dan Fogler plays Chuck's best buddy, a pathetically lascivious plastic surgeon who resorts to produce for his physical needs, and Lonny Ross is Alba's stoner brother and pretty much the funniest thing in the film.

Available in separate R-rated and unrated editions, each in separate wide-screen and full-screen formats. All versions feature the "All About the Penguins" featurette and a laid-back commentary track by Cook and Helfrich with writer Josh Stolberg and producer Mike Karz. It's not really all that illuminating, mostly full of shooting trivia and production vignettes with Cook making wry jokes in between, but it's innocuously entertaining. The unrated version, which runs about five minutes longer than the theatrical R-rated cut, also includes three more featurettes (including the decidedly adult-oriented "Polymastia" and "Kama Sutra"), a gag reel, deleted and alternate scenes (including an alternate ending), a collection of ad-libs, and the "Sex Matrix" – instant access to 16 "fierce thrusting" positions from the sex montage.
