Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies The mother of all Japanese monster movies, "Gojira" (1954) created an entire industry, spawned over 20 sequels and countless spin-offs and knock-offs. "Gojira: Collector's Edition" restores the original, uncut, atomic monster movie, directed by former Akira Kurosawa assistant Ishiro Honda with a somber moodiness, as well as the American version. This box set also features six of the sequels, including "Mothra vs. Godzilla" (1964), the fourth appearance of the Big G and the best sequel of the series, "Godzilla Raids Again" (1955), "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster" (1964) and "Invasion f Astro-Monster" (1965). Exclusive to this set are remastered editions of "All Monsters Attack" (1969), a juvenile entry centered around a young boy's adventure on monster island with Minilla (the son of Godzilla), and "Terror of Mechagodzilla" (1975), which reunites the scaly one with original director Ishiro Honda and composer Akira Ifubuke for a rumble with evil spacemen and a rampaging robot monster replica of Godzilla. Each disc features both remastered Japanese and dubbed American release versions, as well as commentary and featurettes. The sturdy box might even stand up to the mighty monster himself. | ||||||||||||||
