(Note: This review refers to the Blu-ray version of the DVD.)

In this Edward Zwick drama, Matthew Broderick gets top billing as the young Northern army officer who volunteers to lead the first company of black soldiers in the Civil War and finds his biggest battle is with the racism of the enemy and his own fellow officers. Denzel Washington won his first Oscar as an angry ex-slave who bristles at the racism in the ranks. Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes and Andre Braugher co-star. Along with the supplements previously available on DVD -- commentary, documentary featurettes and deleted scenes -- is a Blu-ray exclusive, "Virtual Civil War Battlefield Interactive Map," so you'll always know where you are in battle.
