Pictures/New Line/Paramount DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Producer Michael Bay and director Marcus Nispel, the men behind the sadistic slaughterhouse remake of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," redo another iconic '70s horror flick. Their return to Camp Crystal Lake is not exactly treading on sacred ground -- the original "Friday the 13th" wasn't ever a good film, merely an obscenely successful cut-rate horror that spawned an absurd number of sequels -- so they mix and match elements from the first three films for a splatterfest in the woods. The original (where Jason only appeared in the final shot) is referenced in a prologue, and we watch Jason evolve from mummy wrap to hockey mask (which made its appearance in the third film). We root for nice kids Jared Padalecki and Danielle Panabaker as the rest of the cast has sex and smokes dope and gets stabbed, hacked, slashed and worse for their sins. There's nudity to titillate and humor to lighten the otherwise grim mood, but it's essentially a slicker version of the same old body-count film. The extended "Killer Cut," which runs nine minutes longer, also includes the self-congratulatory featurette "The Rebirth of Jason Voorhees" and eight minutes of deleted/alternate scenes. Exclusive to the Blu-ray edition is a profile of "The 7 Best Kills" (featuring the immortal line "It's original; you haven't seen anyone cooked in a sleeping bag before."), a tribute to the original film (with no original clips!) and a spotty picture-in-picture "Terror Trivia Track" of interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. | ||
