Freebie and the Bean

Alan Arkin and James Caan are scrappy partners on the San Francisco Police Force assigned to keep a mobster alive while they await a warrant. Richard Rush directs and produces the offbeat mix of cynical '70s cop cinema and slapstick crime farce, complete with careening car chases. Arkin and Caan are the original bad cop/worse cop team, knocking around suspects with the least bit of provocation while Caan keeps up a steady stream of racial slurs, most of them directed at his partner. Loretta Swit, Alex Rocco and Valerie Harper co-star, and Christopher Morley is on the extreme end of 1970s stereotypes as a flamboyantly gay hustler.
