Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Millionaire industrialist Anthony Hopkins boldly murders his wife and plays a legal mind game with hotshot assistant district attorney Ryan Gosling in the legal thriller from Gregory Hoblit ("Primal Fear"), a battle of wits and wiles between the arrogant legal sharpie and a criminal mastermind. In this case, it's also a showdown between the old-school acting of the stage-trained Hopkins and the loose, behavioral style of the up-and-coming Gosling, which is the real draw here. The gimmicky little murder mystery, where a seemingly open-and-shut case turns out to be a deviously plotted scheme to get away with murder and humiliate the cops and the arrogant young attorney in the bargain, plays like a terrific episode of "Law & Order" with great production values and a tired lesson in humility. David Strathairn plays Gosling's idealistic old boss, and Rosamund Pike, Embeth Davidtz, Billy Burke, and Cliff Curtis co-star. The DVD features five deleted/alternate scenes and two alternate endings, the latter the most interesting part of the disc as different dramatic approaches to the same essential material are explored. | ||||||||||||||
