PG,1hr 48min Genre: Released: November 21, 2007 Director: Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Amy Adams provides the fairy dust that makes this live-action incarnation of Disney's animated fairy tales come to life, if only when she's on-screen. A princess who falls out of her animated fantasy and into New York's Times Square, her wide-eyed cheer and unfailing optimism inspire bystanders to leap into spontaneous dance numbers and sewer rats to chip in with the housework. Patrick Dempsey is rather colorless as the stiff attorney and real-world love interest, but James Marsden brings a hearty innocence and a comic sense of entitlement to the film's cheerfully cocky version of Prince Charming. Given the possibilities, this genial spoof is not particularly inventive, but it is nice to see a comedy so affectionate with the conventions it parodies. Susan Sarandon cackles up a storm as the wicked queen, Timothy Spall and Idina Menzel co-star, and Julie Andrews narrates. The three "Fantasy Comes to Life" featurettes (on the musical numbers "Happy Working Song" and "That's How You Know" and the big climax) are nicely illustrated with behind-the-scenes footage. Also features six deleted scenes (with introductions by director Kevin Lima), bloopers, and the animated video storybook "Pip's Predicament: A Pop-Up Adventure." Also available in Blu-ray format. | ||||||||||||||
