PG13,1hr 33min Genre: Released: March 30, 2007 Directors: Distributor: Paramount Pictures Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Will Ferrell and Jon Heder are Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy, the most unlikely male figure-skating stars in the world. Think of them as the alpha and omega of the sport, or more accurately the alpha male (whose moves reflect a life spent "studying" strippers and pole dancers) and the preening peacock on ice (with feathered locks and girlie costumes). When their bitter rivalry spills over into a fracas on the awards dais, they are banned for life from men's competition ... but not, thanks to a loophole, from pairs skating. Odd-couple bickering and crotch gags ensue. Directed by first-time helmers Josh Gordon and Will Speck, it's as stupid and silly as it is funny, with absurdly florid and tastelessly choreographed skate routines (love that JFK and Marilyn-themed duet from sibling act Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) and plenty of backroom scheming. But the high funny quotient has less to do with the high concept humor than the ensemble generosity of Ferrell, who spreads the gags around where others stars might hoard the spotlight. Jenna Fischer (of "The Office") plays the mousy little sister of the sibling superstar skaters, whose romance with Heder is like a grade-school bout of puppy love, and Craig T. Nelson is the coach who plots the comeback of the banned skaters with a dynamic stunt that has the downside of decapitation when performed wrong. Available in separate wide-screen and full-screen editions, plus Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. The supplements on the DVD are as tongue-in-cheek as the movie itself. The interviews in the 15-minute featurette "Return to Glory: The Making of Blades" are played for comic potential, and the six-minute interview "Arnett & Poehler - A Family Affair" is all about the comic chemistry of the married couple. Olympic gold medal skater Scott Hamilton even gets in on the fun in "Twenty Questions With Scott Hamilton." The four deleted scenes include an ear-curdling duet between Ferrell and Heder. Also features "Celebrities on Thin Ice" (on the training), the nine-minute online talk show "Moviephone Unscripted With Will Ferrell, Jon Heder and Will Arnett," photo galleries, and other supplements. | ||||||||||||||
