Awake

Hayden Christensen plays a young financial superman who goes under the knife for a heart transplant, except that the anesthesia has left him awake but paralyzed for the operation, unable to communicate with the surgeons who are up to their elbows in his chest cavity. The phenomenon is real -- a small percentage of surgical patients experience "anesthesia awareness" (at least according to the opening titles of the film) -- but this guy's story is pure fiction: He discovers a conspiracy against his life and investigates while trapped on the table, apparently abetted by a few out-of-body experiences. Jessica Alba plays his newlywed wife, Terrence Howard his trusted but young doctor of choice, Lena Olin his controlling mother, and Christopher McDonald the last-minute replacement for a no-show anesthesiologist.
