Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Warren Beatty is an insolent, irresponsible young stud with a misogynistic streak who has an affair with his "old maid" cousin (Eva Marie Saint) in this drama directed by John Frankenheimer from a grim William Inge script. The young Beatty delivers a smoldering performance, Saint reveals an emotional fragility under a sardonic humor and a flirtatious manner, and Frankenheimer cuts to the bone in his portrait of the smothering American family and the self-destructive reaction. This is one of the first titles available from Warner Home Video's "Archive Collection," which was launched in March with 150 films. As of this writing, there are more than 200 DVD on Demand titles available in no-frills editions and fine (if not quite stellar) digital masters (most of them made for broadcast on TCM) burned to disc as DVD-Rs. They don't have the crispness and high standard of digital restoration of traditional Warner DVDs but they make available titles that would otherwise take years to arrive on DVD. | ||||||||||||||
