The gushy romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl as girl Friday Jane, the eternal bridesmaid who moons over the romance of weddings as if they were the whole point of marriage, is a movie directed like a pageant. There's nothing you can't predict, from the train wreck that is her sister (Malin Akerman) swooping in to steal the man of her dreams (Edward Burns) to the inevitable chemistry between girly Jane and smart-aleck cynic Kevin (James Marsden), a wedding reporter who mocks the traditions that Jane embraces like a dream. Choreographer-turned-director Anne Fletcher moves the film along smoothly, hitting the marks and timing the jokes right on the way to an ending of tears and hugs and forgiveness and dreams come true. It's connect-the-dots filmmaking by a talented tracer, delivering the comforting inevitability that people seem to like in their romantic comedies. Available in separate wide-screen and full-screen versions. Includes four brief featurettes (including a tribute to the unforgettably hideous bridesmaid outfits) and three deleted scenes. | |||||||||||||||
