DVD Review

To Monsieur with love? This French drama is not your classic tale of an inspiring educator who wins the trust and respect of his triumphant class. Shot like a documentary and performed with an authenticity that cuts deep into the fiction, it is a remarkably observant and affecting portrait of a group of junior high students (all played by talented non-actors) over the course of a year. It won the Palme d'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. The 41-minute making-of featurette and in-depth discussions with director Laurent Cantet and co-writer/star Francois Bégaudeau on three key scenes really dig deep into the production. Exclusive to the Blu-ray are an illuminating half-hour "Actor's Workshop" featurette and the spoken "self portraits" from the film.
