PG13,1hr 34min Released: June 22, 2007 Director: Distributor: MGM/Dimension Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies John Cusack plays a best-selling author who specializes in debunking paranormal events in the horror film directed by Mikael Håfström. He meets his match when he checks into the "haunted room" of the Dolphin Hotel to tackle what he thinks is just another hoax despite the warnings of the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson). "Adapted from a [Stephen] King short story, the movie piles on plenty of images and noises done to death in the horror genre, bleeding walls and moaning spirits among them," writes Associated Press critic David Germain. "But Håfström manages fresh and creepy twists, expanding the story far beyond the confines of a single room to, as 'Twilight Zone' ringmaster Rod Serling might have put it, the paranormal playground of the imagination." Mary McCormack and Tony Shalhoub co-star. Available in separate wide-screen and full-screen versions, each with the featurettes "John Cusack on 1408" and "Inside Room 1408." The two-disc collector's edition features wide-screen editions of both the theatrical PG-13-rated version and the extended, unrated director's cut, complete with an alternate ending, and also features commentary by Håfström and screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, deleted scenes with optional commentary, and "The Secrets of 1408" featurette. | ||||||||||||||
