Reginald Rose's perennial "12 Angry Men" gets exported to Russia in Nikita Mikhalkov's version of the teleplay turned screenplay turned stage play. Mikhalkov directs and stars as the foreman of a Moscow jury who must decide on the guilt or innocence of an immigrant Chechen youth on trial for the murder of his stepfather. Less an adaptation than a reworking, Mikhalkov's take expands the drama to more than two-and-a-half hours to tackle Russian nationalism, anti-Semitism and still-new democratic ideals in the former Soviet Union.
