My Lover, My Son is a rather frustrating movie. It sounds like a perfectly trashy exploitation flick, yet it has more on its mind than taking its controversial subject matter and creating a lurid little melodrama. Unfortunately, while it aims to be something more serious, it lacks the depth that it tries to attain. Lover wants to offer a sincere meditation on the meaning of love and to be an examination of various characters and their motivations. But it never succeeds in getting under the surface of the subject, never succeeds in getting under the skin of its characters. Thus, it falls uncomfortably between art and exploitation. There's enough seriousness of intent to satisfy many viewers, and John Newland's sincere direction helps matters. It also must be admitted that Romy Schneider's performance is actually quite good, and she looks simply stunning. There's insufficient age difference between her and Dennis Waterman, and Waterman is only so-so in a role that requires a great deal more, two other strikes against the movie. But those interested in a film that centers on an unusual subject and at least makes a game attempt to look at it honestly will find enough here to make it worth watching. ~ Craig Butler, Rovi
