Quickies: Is Lindsay a Political Hot Potato?

Did Lindsay Lohan hope to do more for Barack Obama than just call out Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, on her MySpace page as a "narrow-minded, media-obsessed homophobe"? The Chicago Sun-Times reports that she offered to host a few events designed to attract a younger voting demographic. The supposed response from the Obama camp: Thanks, but we're good. A campaign insider tells the paper that the thrice-rehabbed actress, who did not attend Obama's coffer-filling celebrity fundraiser Tuesday night in Beverly Hills, "is not exactly the kind of high-profile star who would be a positive for us." That comment prompted TMZ to contact McCain's people, with a spokesman doing some questionable political sniping before concluding, "Maybe LiLo is just too upstanding for Barack Obama." But Obama's mouthpiece was quick to respond, zinging, "Glad to see they're focused on the important issues over in McCain HQ."

Can Will Smith keep the peace between Scientologists and Anonymous?

Will Smith isn't afraid to face his critics, even when the critics in question are wearing masks. FoxNews.com reports the A-lister met with Anonymous, the mysterious group that has been waging a campaign against Scientology since the beginning of the year. "I did talk to them," says Smith, who many suspect is in L. Ron Hubbard's cupboard due to his friendship with Tom Cruise and the fact that the Los Angeles school he helped found uses Scientology teaching materials. When asked directly whether he's a Scientologist, the actor asserts, "I am not." And the use of some of the church's instructional methods at the school? "You can take different parts of things you like and put them all together," he explains. In a statement, Anonymous acknowledged Smith's willingness to chat with them, saying, "We appreciate Will's interest in our efforts and his openness in speaking with us directly. It shows his concern both as a parent and educator."

Jerry Seinfeld checks out the results of Gwyneth's anti-dieting policy.

Gwyneth Paltrow wants everyone to know that she's just like us. "I just cannot diet," the former macrobiotic devotee fessed up to an empathetic Oprah on Wednesday's show. "I think maybe it's the idea that you can't have something ... I just can't do it." Unlike most of us, however, she's willing to put in that extra hour or four at the gym to ensure her indulgences don't go straight to her thighs -- or any other slimline body part. Says Gwyn, who is out promoting her new PBS foodie series in Spain with chef-pal Mario Batali, "I just figured it's worth it to me to do that extra exercise so I can eat what I want and not think about it."

Shia LaBeouf isn't about to apologize for admitting that he prefers women who are smart, sophisticated and stunning. During a sit-down on Tuesday with Jay Leno, the actor stood by his recent declaration to Maxim that Diane Sawyer "just does it for me." "Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong about that," opined Shia of his warm and fuzzy feelings for the ABC newswoman, who has 40 years on him. "I look at her and I feel, you know, she's cute." But LaBeouf, who was last seen in the company of his "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" co-star Isabel Lucas (she was riding shotgun during the rollover accident that left his hand smashed), insists his intentions toward Sawyer are gentlemanly. "I don't wanna do dirty stuff, just, like, go to the park. Have her read to me, some fruits, talk about the economy," he joked to Leno, adding directly to the camera, "Hey, Diane, I think you're very beautiful."
