She's a self-described commitment-phobe. He has a soft spot for starlets who can ably fill out a sweater. But it looks like there could be a love connection brewing between Cameron Diaz, 34, and John Mayer, 29.

The former flame of Justin Timberlake and the onetime squeeze of Jessica Simpson reportedly tested the ever-more-polluted waters of the celebrity dating pool Tuesday night as they stepped out together in New York.

"They went out to several places," an insider tells Us Weekly. "It was the two of them, getting to know each other, out on the town."

The fledgling flames appeared "nuzzly and besotted" as they perambulated down the street with digits intertwined, a spy tattles to the New York Daily News, while an eyewitness informs the New York Post that Cam and John were "very playful and cozy" over a romantic dinner at eatery Indochine.

The leggy actress, who is in New York to shoot the comedy "What Happens in Vegas," and the lately comely crooner (it's amazing what a good haircut can do for a guy) have apparently been on each other's radar for a while.

"This was technically not their first time hanging out ... they've hung out together with friends before," the mole explains to Us. "But this was the first time together like this. It's new and developing ... but they really like each other and it went well."

Although reps for Diaz and Mayer remain mum on the rumblings, this isn't the only romance rumor to hit the duo in recent days.

Cam, who parted ways with Timberlake in January and reportedly had a brief dalliance with indiscreet illusionist Criss Angel a couple months back, has recently been linked to her "Holiday" co-star Jude Law (he's denied the whispers).

Meanwhile, Mayer, whose capricious coupling with Simpson went belly-up for good in June, was snapped dining al fresco with Mandy Moore on Tuesday afternoon, setting off wooing whispers.

"Oh my goodness. John and I have been friends for years," Moore pooh-poohed to "Extra" at the "Dedication" premiere that night. "No romance."

The facial contortion-prone singer has made no secret of his dream of finding the "right woman" and last year offered Rolling Stone a helpful list of rules on "How to be John Mayer's girlfriend."

Among them: "You'll never cheat"; "You have to run every single fantasy you've ever had through me"; and "Twenty-four-hour phone-sex assistance. If there's a cute girl in the front row, I'm gonna run offstage and call you."

"Nobody really wants to be single," Mayer has admitted to People. "Everyone's looking for the right thing. I'd be willing to give up anything, anytime for that ..."

Diaz, for her part, has long talked about her desire to keep her life complication-free, insisting she doesn't want a dog, never mind kids.
