Brad Pitt: Actor. Father. Philanthropist. Poet?
Reports surfaced this week that the megastar commemorated Angelina Jolie's 32nd birthday on June 4 by commissioning a
French jeweler to engrave an 18-carat gold "love-letter" pendant with the
schmoopy sentiment, "I find you in the morning sky, in the sound of children's
laughter, in the motion of every stirring wind. I love you, Brad."
The $2,000 necklace, which consists of a tiny gold card slipped into a
matching envelope, also supposedly featured a portrait of 3-year-old Pax, who
joined Maddox, 5, Zahara, 3, and Shiloh, 1, in the ever-expanding Jolie-Pitt
club in March.
Sounds romantic in a syrupy sort of way, right? Too bad the impossibly pretty
parents, who are now sporting identical golden-flecked brunette coifs, deny any
such gift exchange took place.
"I'm much better than that," Pitt jokingly asserted to "Extra" at the Los
Angeles premiere of "Ocean's Thirteen" on Tuesday. "I'm much smoother than that."
Echoed Jolie, "It's not true. I got something else." She declined to
elaborate on what that something might be.
Meanwhile, the New York Daily News reports the weedy Oscar winner, who made
the scene in a skintight Versace dress accessorized by Pitt's palm
suction-cupped to her backside, attempted to downplay her presence at the
premiere, repeatedly insisting to reporters, "It's Brad's night."
Not that Angelina is lacking attention at the moment. She's nearing PR
overload as she promotes her critically lauded drama "A Mighty Heart" (on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, she
attended a benefit screening at the Museum of Tolerance that raised $15,000 for
the Daniel Pearl Foundation).
Jolie has been unbuttoning her pillowy lips to many a media outlet, dishing
on everything from her bath-time confessions to Brad to the thing she finds most
attractive in a man. Here are a few highlights:
On How Brad Gets Her to Bare Her Soul: "I don't know how he
does it, but ... I talk a lot in the bath," she reveals to Marie Claire. "It's
easier to talk when you're naked ... Get naked with me, and I'll talk!" (By the
by, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle riffed off this revelation at the
"Ocean's" premiere, gracing "Access
Hollywood" with the following exchange: Matt: I notice that with Brad also.
Don: You too? Matt: When we get in the tub ... Don: When we get in the tub he
wants to talk all the time. Matt: It's like, I just want to soak.)
On Her Altruism Epiphany: She tells Esquire of the
life-altering trip she made to Sierra Leone six years ago, "It was as if someone
slapped me across the face and said, 'Oh my God, you silly young woman from
California. Do you have any idea how difficult the world really is for so many
people?'"
On the Brad-Mad Bond: "I'm so happy for my children --
especially Mad," she gushes to Marie Claire. "I didn't know if he was ever going
to have a dad. So when I watch them having real strong father-son time, or even
when Mad tells me, 'This is a boy thing, Mom,' it's just really beautiful to
see. It's hot. There's nothing sexier than a man who is a great father."
On Pax's Boxer Rebellion: "I'm still having trouble
convincing Pax that underwear and pants go together -- underwear is not pants!"
On Forming an Insta-Family With Pitt: "I think we both went
on a lot of faith -- we really did. Our family has grown very quickly, and we
have a lot of responsibility together, and we acknowledge that we are lucky we
turned out to be for each other everything we'd hoped. We could have been very
wrong, but every challenge we hit has brought us closer. It has been that kind
of relationship."
On Their Poopie Pants-Filled Future: "Brad and I have a lot
of kids, and we want to have more kids," she tells Parade. "It's fun, and we
love it. But you can't balance everything. I think both of us only plan to work
for a few more years. We'll try to stop sooner or later, so we can be home and
travel, and just live."
On Her Plans for Late-in-Life Quality Time: "Some people
have their lives together and then they have their children," she acknowledges
to Esquire. "Brad and I are starting with the children and are planning to have
our time together in our later years."
On Easing Out of the Public Eye: "Certainly we're not
running from all that. That's not our motivation," she explains to Parade.
"We're public people. We know that, and the world is what it is today, with
press and media. But, yeah, I think it will be nice to, you know, just not be so
-- so out there."
On Her Legacy: "I have no animosity toward Hollywood or the
demands of the red carpet, all that silliness," she insists to Esquire. "That's
my job, and I'm happy to have it. But when I die, do I want to be remembered as
an actress? No. I recently had an op-ed published in a newspaper. And at the
end, it didn't say I was an actress. It said that I was a U.N. goodwill
ambassador -- that's all. And I was really proud."
