These days, it seems like the Hollywood dating pool isn't so much
Olympic-sized as one of those inflatable kiddie jobs that can barely cool off
your tootsies. Case in point: Kate Hudson has apparently bounced back from her "pretty bad breakup" with Owen Wilson by keeping company with Lance Armstrong, who's not unfamiliar with dating one
of his pal's ex-girlfriends.
The Tour de France champ, 36, who previously hooked up with the funnyman's
former flame Sheryl Crow, was spied hanging out with the actress, 29, over
the weekend in his hometown of Austin, Texas.
People magazine reports that, on Friday night, the strangely sense-making duo
broke bread at Eddie V's, one of Armstrong's favorite eateries.
The following evening was kiddie-centric, with Kate joining Lance and his
three tykes -- 8-year-old Luke and 6-year-old twins Isabelle and Grace -- for
what the magazine describes as a "casual" meal with some friends at the
family-friendly Hula Hut.
"They came in with the kids and a large group of people," says a restaurant
insider. "They ordered dinner -- tacos, burgers and fries and that sort of stuff
... They looked like they were having fun."
The Austin American-Statesman adds that Hudson's 4-year-old son, Ryder (dad
is Black Crowes rocker Chris Robinson), also joined in on the greasy food feast.
"Kate and Lance have been dating for a couple of weeks," a mole maintains to
the London Daily Mail. "She thought it was funny when people were writing
recently that she was engaged to Owen because the
reality was that they had split again and she was secretly seeing Lance."
According to the paper, the golden glow-emitting pair's attraction was
jump-started after they recently crossed paths at a private soiree in New York.
"They have known each other for a while and Lance is one of Owen's good
friends," explains the source. "When Kate was with Owen, she got to know Lance
really well but they hooked up again recently at a dinner party thrown by a
mutual friend and that's when the romance began. They have both been keeping it
very quiet."
As for the basis of the attraction, the snitch says, "She and Lance are both
physical, passionate people -- she's never been happier."
And for those with some free time and a high tolerance for disposable
comedies, there's now a reason to dust off Kate and Owen's 2006 flick, "You, Me and Dupree."
In the movie, Wilson's titular character worships Armstrong (sample dialogue:
"That guy has done more with one testicle than you have with both arms!"), who
pops up in a cameo.
But the actor admitted that not even his alter ego's idol could hold the
attention of the cast and crew when Hudson arrived on the set in an itty-bitty
bikini.
"I remember everyone was in awe of him and wanted to have their picture taken
with him," Owen said of working with the cycling icon. "Then Kate walked out in
that bathing suit, and suddenly everyone sort of forgot about Lance."
Reps for Hudson and Armstrong are mum on the romance rumors.
Lance, whose engagement to Crow fizzled in 2006, was last linked to designer
Tory Burch and the cringingly dewy Ashley Olsen (he adamantly denied reports of lap-sitting and tonsil-sucking).
Kate reconnected with Owen in February
following their initial bust-up in May 2007. After that split, she immediately
segued into a PDA-packed summer fling with Dax Shepard, while Owen made
headlines with a reported suicide attempt in July.
"Any guy I ever meet is always going to come second to my son," Hudson
recently told Britain's Sunday Times. "And you get to weed out the boys from the
men. You definitely know which ones are the boys."
She also fessed up to hearing the ticking of her biological clock: "I can't
wait to have more. I'm at that place when I'm ready to have another one and
Chris and I are not together. I'm like, 'Oh no! Uh-oh! I'm ready.'"
