It's nice to know that Justin Timberlake and John Mayer are the kind of guys who will be there
for a former flame in her time of need. According to People, the crooners were
on hand Sunday to support Cameron Diaz at a memorial service for her father,
Emilio Diaz, who passed away suddenly last Tuesday from pneumonia at the age of
58. Guests at the gathering, which took place in Seal Beach, Calif., dressed
down to honor the "exuberant Diaz family spirit," says the mag. "Most people
started arriving at 1:30 and hardly [anyone] wore black," relays an insider.
"Lots of people were wearing Hawaiian shirts. It looked more like a party."
Cam's family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Emilio's
name to two of his favorite organizations, Surfrider.org or Reefcheck.org. "My
mom, sister and I are deeply appreciative of the overwhelming outpouring of love
and support during this difficult time for us and all of our family," the
actress said in a statement last week. "My dad was loved by so many people and
his humor and spirit will always live on in our hearts."
Cate Blanchett and son Ignatius at the
Australia 2020 summit in Canberra, April 2008 |
Instead of offering up her brand new bundle of joy to the highest bidder, Cate Blanchett decided to show him off as he got his
very first taste of political activism. The Oscar winner, luminous in a brown
suit, toted son Ignatius along to the Australia 2020 summit in Canberra over the
weekend, a meeting billed as a gathering of the "best and brightest" to "help
shape a long-term strategy for the nation's future." "He will be starting high
school by 2020," Blanchett said of Iggy as she explained how important the event
is to her (via the AFP). "He is a lucky bugger I hope. It is a measure of my
belief in the weekend that I am here at all; as you could imagine, I would
rather be in bed." During the conference, the tot, who arrived on April 13,
slept soundly in a sling on dad Andrew Upton's chest in the front row, with his
slumber occasionally interrupted by breast-feeding breaks outside with mom.
"Cate is superwoman," gushed fellow attendee Hugh Jackman. "She is flawless as a person and I'm
thrilled that she's leading our stream."
Ryan Phillippe continues to make life difficult for 8-year-old daughter Ava
by talking about how difficult her life is because of the paparazzi. "She's
aware and it creates in her a lot of anxiety, which is partly my fault," the
ex-husband of Reese Witherspoon observes to the London Times
Magazine. "When Ava was very young, I was young, too. And brash. I'd get ... I
wouldn't like to say violent, but visibly angry at the paparazzi back then. She
was my first child, and my instinct was to protect her." That attitude, he
concedes, "did create in her a lot of the fearfulness she has today." Phillippe
says 4-year-old son Deacon is better at handling the presence of the
shutterbugs, "mainly because since his birth I've realized that you've got to
make it seem like less of a big deal. Ava to this day, though ... It breaks my
heart to think about it, hearing her say, 'My friends at school saw a picture of
me in a magazine and they made fun 'cause I was carrying a blanket.'" (And we're
sure she really appreciates you bringing up that whole blanket trauma again,
Dad.) Says Ryan, "A little girl having to consider how she looks before
leaving the house? I have a privileged life and hate to complain but there's
something vile about that."
