Public opinion on Lindsay Lohan's Marilyn Monroe-inspired photo shoot hasn't exactly
been kind, with many critics -- armchair and otherwise -- saying thanks for the
mammaries but no thanks to everything else.
But there's one person who is all for the underemployed, sobriety-challenged
starlet's questionable career move to bare her boobs (and more): her
spotlight-craving mom-ager, Dina Lohan.
"It was very tastefully done," she proclaims to People of the pics, which
were taken by Bert Stern, the photographer who snapped the original shots of the
iconic blond bombshell six weeks before her death in 1962. "I respect the
photographer as an artist, so I look at them artistically."
(Not looking? Lindsay's equally media-chatty dad Michael, who exclaims to Us,
"I'm not going to look at the photos -- that's my daughter!")
The photos represent more than Stern's mastery of the mammose form, explains
Dina, who believes it was a huge compliment for her daughter to be asked to doff
her duds.
"For him to call Lindsay 46 years later and to say can you recreate these
photos is an honor," opines the proud, up-with-publicity mom. "I looked at it as
art, and as Lindsay doing a character. So I don't look at them like it's
Playboy; she was being a character. So if you look at it that way, you can look
at it as a mother."
And what of the maternal instinct that made her decide to give Lindsay's
little sis Ali permission to join her at the clothing-optional shoot?
"Trust me," says Dina (and right there is where she lost us), "I wouldn't
have sent my 14-year-old to the set [if the shoot was in bad taste]. And
obviously Lindsay wouldn't do anything with her sister there, that was risqué."
Besides, she continues, Lindsay "was very excited" and "very thankful she was
asked" to channel Marilyn.
"She's always loved Marilyn. For Christmas, my girlfriends even gave her a
Marilyn cookie jar," shares the verbose, soon-to-be-reality-show-starring Mama
Lohan, who doesn't say whether Linds will get the matching "Live Fast, Die
Young" coffee mug with James Dean if she's a good girl this year.
(Speaking of her reality show, the New York Daily News says she's "almost
desperate" to get her most famous offspring to appear. "Dina needs Lindsay if
this show is going to be a big hit," explains an insider. "Unfortunately, if
Lindsay participates, it will only hinder her growth and stunt her career. She's
a gifted actress and not a reality TV star.")
Concludes Dina, "I think there's a sadness that Lindsay feels for Marilyn.
Lindsay really saw it as a gift back to someone."
As for the gifts that keep on giving, otherwise known as her au naturel
knockers, their unveiling in the pages of New York magazine may have been
something of a surprise to Lohan's people.
Radar says Stern "suggested a much less revealing homage for the mag," and
her rep, who supportively points out, "Obviously you can see her breasts are
real," says the nudie publishing plan wasn't clarified.
One rumor has Stern proposing the nudes for a museum display or as part of a
book, with the "tamer shots" earmarked for the New York spread.
One veteran PR flack believes Lohan's breast intentions may hurt her attempts
to resurrect her career, telling the mag, "She needs to get back to acting. I'd
rather see her do a student film at USC than take her clothes off in a
look-at-me-moment. These shots run the real risk of overshadowing her acting
career."
Lohan's mouthpiece notes the actress is an adult who made "an artistic
choice," but acknowledges, "At the end of the day, I was shocked by this."
