Did Katy Perry, who's built an entire career around a catchy tune about swapping saliva with a girl, recently receive a spittle-covered sparkler from beau Travis McCoy? So claims the New York Daily News, which says the Gym Class Heroes front man proposed in Paris by smooching the singer with a "massive ring" in his mouth. Cute, if disgusting, story -- and one Perry insists is untrue. "NOT engaged!" the popster responded on her blog. "But thanks for the free press New York Daily News! You should fact check with the source before you spread worldwide news like that."

Just as we were moving into the acceptance stage of our grieving process over the breakup of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, there comes speculation over what led to their demise. "He still loves Rachel and Rachel still loves him," a source explains to People, "but the timing is off and they can't make each other happy right now." You'll recall that the "Notebook" lovebirds, who initially parted ways in April 2007 over "conflicting work schedules," briefly reunited over the summer, even enjoying a shutterbug-captured, squee!-inciting cuddle-fest at a Toronto café in August. Gosling "is still close to McAdams' family and he still speaks to Rachel," adds the mole, "but they are both openly single." The actress is currently in London filming "Sherlock Holmes," and she was snapped on Monday sightseeing with a pal; her ex, meanwhile, has been honing his DJ skills in Los Angeles -- and checking out the local talent. "He has been flirting with a lot of girls in L.A. and weighing the options!" tattles the insider. But is one of those options Kirsten Dunst? People spotted Gosling in proximity to his "All Good Things" co-star at The Cure's recent show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. "They were on the balcony close to each other," says a spy of the pair, who were linked back in April (denied all around). "She was dancing a lot."

Was Paris Hilton actually telling the truth when she said that she and ex-boyfriend Benji Madden are still friends? The former flames shared an on-camera hug at a Dolce & Gabbana shindig Monday night in Los Angeles. According to E! News, the newly chrome-domed Good Charlotte rocker made a beeline for the starlet as she was doing a red carpet interview and the exes soon made their way into the party. A cozy tête-à-tête in a "private corner" followed, as did an exchange of pleasantries with frenemy Nicole Richie and Benji's twin brother Joel, who were apparently indulging in a date night away from nearly 1-year-old Harlow. But Paris and Benji's hang-time doesn't necessarily mean a reconciliation is in the works. When asked whom she'd like to find under the mistletoe, Paris baby-talked, "I'm single and not really interested in kissing anyone." But at least one British tabloid begs to differ, alleging that while out at a Los Angeles hot spot, she caught the eye of Gerard Butler, whose hotness factor just diminished by a factor of 10 as we typed that (and it was already seriously depleted after his October meeting with Shanna Moakler). Taking the suspicious sighting further, the tab claims Hilton has even nicknamed the Scottish star "Braveheart," a moniker that seems like a cultural stretch from the blonde who once said in a deposition, "It's like a weird Greek name. Like Douglas or ..." Butler's rep didn't respond to our request for comment on the report.

Don't quite believe Gwyneth Paltrow's spokesman when he dismisses rumors of her marital strife with Chris Martin as "rubbish"? How about a word from the Coldplay front man himself? In an interview with the London Daily Mirror, he insists there's no "bad news" on the horizon, saying, "I'm supposed to be getting divorced," but it's "not happening." The pooh-poohing continues with Gwyneth's mom, Blythe Danner, who tells FoxNews.com that the parents of Apple, 4, and Moses, 2, are doing just fine. "They're staying in England for the new year," says the veteran actress. "Then coming [to New York]." As for the couple's policy of not appearing in public together, Danner explains, "They don't take pictures together if they can avoid it. It's a strategy. They don't want the pandemonium." (It seems like major wishful thinking on Gwyneth and Chris' part that their combined star power could cause the chaos of, say, her ex Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but moving on ...) Danner's "all is well" bulletin follows a similar statement from Paltrow's foodie buddy Mario Batali, who told OK! last week, "I see them all the time. I don't think they're having problems."

Ryan Phillippe is in the midst of a table-turning holiday in Australia with girlfriend Abbie Cornish. At a Calvin Klein soiree in Sydney on Tuesday, photographers reportedly called out "Brian" as the actor walked the red carpet with his Down Under honey, who is much better known in her homeland than in Hollywood. Maybe the moniker mix-up was why Phillippe seemed less than thrilled to see the paparazzi as he and Cornish, whom he met on the set of "Stop-Loss" in 2006, headed back to their hotel later that night. He hid his face and supposedly announced that he was in no mood for photographs. At least there's good cheer in his future. People says Ryan will celebrate Christmas with his girlfriend's clan. Meanwhile, kids Ava, 9, and Deacon, 5, who spent Thanksgiving with him and Cornish at his family's home in Delaware, will unwrap their gifts with mom Reese Witherspoon and her squeeze, Jake Gyllenhaal.
