Aniston's Dinner With Butler: Business, Pleasure or Both?

Updated on Oct. 28, 2008

Is Jennifer Aniston keeping her personal or professional options open? Less than three weeks after her much-ballyhooed reunion with John Mayer, the actress was reportedly spotted back in the company of Gerard Butler.

The New York Post says the pair, who brushed off hookup speculation after they had a brief but supposedly touchy-feely tête-à-tête at the Toronto Film Festival in September, broke bread last week at the bar of the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles, the same spot where Jen recently joined John for a romantic dinner date.

"They were very affectionate to each other," a mole picture-paints to the paper. "There was another man at the table, but he looked like he was a chaperone -- or just there to stop tongues wagging. They basically ignored him."

But Star classifies Aniston and Butler's Oct. 22 meet-up as "strictly business" and identifies the third wheel as director Andy Tennant.

"Jennifer, Gerard and Andy had a two-hour dinner at approximately 9 p.m.," an eyewitness tells the tab. "They enjoyed a lovely dinner and drinks while talking about a future project. Jennifer was enjoying a glass of white wine."

No word on whether the project they were discussing was "Around the World in 80 Dates," which Tennant, who's responsible for the Kate Hudson-Matthew McConaughey throwaway "Fool's Gold," has long had in development.

"Jen and Gerard got along great," adds the snitch, "and gave each other a long hug before leaving through separate exits."

The official word from the actress' rep on the nature of the meal is that we should all mind our own beeswax.

"It doesn't matter what it was," her spokesman tells E! News. "It is no one's business."

Whatever it was, Butler, who recently insisted that "absolutely nothing" was going on between him and Aniston, appears to be enjoying playing the field.

Not only was he was recently seen "flirting innocently" with Z-lister Shanna Moakler, but the New York Post says he -- and his cowboy outfit -- were a big hit at Kate Hudson's weekend Halloween party.

"All the girls at the party were lining up to talk to Gerard," tattles an insider. "He left with two very sexy vampires."

As for Jen, she probably could have picked a less public place for the sit-down with the Scottish actor, although it's understandable that she'd want to keep the tabloids on their toes, given those recent pregnancy rumors (immediately denied) and the fact that Star is already touting her purported "I do" and poopie-diaper plans with Mayer.

"She said that she'd only take him back if they got married, and he agreed," a wishful-thinking mole asserts to the tabloid. "They both know this is it. She wants to settle down, and finally, so does he. They've even talked about having a family, and John said that he couldn't imagine doing it with anyone but her."

People, however, is slightly less effusive about Jen and John's romantic replay, which comes two months after the motormouthed, short-attention-span crooner declared on camera, "I ended a relationship to be alone because I don't want to waste somebody's time if something's not right."

"They seem happy together," an insider tells the magazine. "There's just major chemistry between them."
