Quickies: Gwyneth's Detox, Reese & Jake's Public Smooch
Posted Jan. 5, 2009

Was one of your New Year's resolutions self-deprivation? Gwyneth Paltrow is there for you. In the latest issue of her GOOP newsletter, the Oscar winner touts a detoxification plan that she says will help her lose those "few pounds of holiday excess." Paltrow, with a little help from her doctor, a detox diet specialist, offers up a seven-day menu that eliminates -- deep breath -- dairy, grains with gluten, meat, shellfish, everything and anything processed (that includes soy products), fatty nuts, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, condiments, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and soda. Fun! The plan's recipes include a blueberry and almond smoothie, broccoli and arugula soup and cucumber, lime and basil juice. "You can detox easily and effectively while you continue to eat as long as you are cutting out the foods and other substances that interfere with the detoxification process. Make sure you check with your doctor before you start any detox. Drink A LOT of water," suggests Gwyneth, who reportedly spent the holidays in London with husband Chris Martin and kids Apple, 4, and Moses, 2. "I will be suffering along with you to kick-start my year a bit lighter. Good luck to us all!" By the by, for those who think Paltrow's GOOP is so much poop, she has nothing but sympathy for you. "I think part of the problem is people get a hit of energy when they are negative about something, and it is a very detrimental way for them to get that hit of energy," she tells USA Today of the site's critics. "They do not understand why they do not have a happy life. That kind of stuff is just noise to me. I just feel sorry for them."

Did Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal resolve to be more candid with their cuddle-bunnies in the new year? The usually low-key couple gamely puckered up in front of a crowd of thousands as they watched the Los Angeles Lakers best the Portland Trailblazers from courtside seats Sunday night in Los Angeles. The lip-on-lip action was part of a stadium-endorsed smooch interlude, when fans are nudged to swap spit on camera. For Reese and Jake, that meant their kiss ended up on the Jumbotron, prompting the glowing, Oscar-winning mom of two to bury her face in her hands as the actor laughed. Also enjoying the buss stop was Witherspoon's seatmate, DreamWorks Studio mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, who's behind her upcoming animated feature, "Monsters vs. Aliens."

Mariah Carey may have welcomed in 2009 with a seriously bulked-up bank account. The New York Daily News says the high-maintenance songbird earned an estimated $1 million for belting out three or four songs at a star-packed New Year's Eve soiree in St. Barts tossed by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's son Saif. In between pocketing about $250,000 a tune, the sparkly minidress-clad Carey quieted pregnancy rumors by quaffing champagne with husband Nick Cannon and guests Beyoncé and Jay-Z (you'll recall that stork chatter grew louder when she nixed a glass of bubbly during a sit-down with Ellen DeGeneres in November). Still, Cannon, 28, is hoping for the pitter-patter of teeny-tiny stiletto-clad feet in 2009. "We'll multiply! That's what's gotta happen," he assures Us Weekly (and seemingly puts undue pressure on his 39-year-old spouse), with a Mariah insider chiming in, "They are trying."

Kate Hudson continues her campaign to prove that she's just like the rest of us schmoes, despite her celebrity lineage. On the heels of her revelation that her famous and well-heeled family was planning to exchange homemade Christmas gifts, the actress tells the London Daily Mail's Live magazine that her childhood wasn't as privileged as people imagine. In fact, she experienced difficult times, even occasionally toughing it out in -- oh, good God, no! -- coach while folks Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell relaxed in first class. "It's funny, because everybody thinks I was spoiled and flew first class everywhere, but it's not true," she insists, apparently not realizing that many kids don't have the wherewithal to fly anywhere, coach or no. "My parents had four children and they weren't going to pay thousands of dollars for our air fares -- can you imagine the cost? They wouldn't do that. We didn't care -- we had each other to play with at the back of the plane, while my parents were traveling in luxury at the front."
