Beckinsale Turns It On

Forget vampires and werewolves: Kate Beckinsale is a comedy superstar waiting to happen. Sadly though, the "Underworld" star hasn't really had a chance to show off her quick wit beyond the occasional press junket and talk-show appearance. And as Adam Sandler's wife in "Click," she mostly plays the straight-woman role to her husband's comic dilemmas, but at least she's actually in a comedy. Still, the prospect of starring in a Sandler flick was incredibly daunting.

"I really did think that I might just be this sort of roaming pair of breasts that wouldn't quite fit in," Beckinsale says. "Everybody would be watching sports and I'd be kind of tolerated and then I might bend over and it might be an event."

Dealing with big boys wasn't a new proposition for Beckinsale, who grew up with four brothers and jokes, "I'm still sore from all the wedgies I had."

As irreverent in person as Beckinsale is, the lack of comedies on her résumé wasn't Hollywood's fault, but stemmed from her own decision to avoid her father's long shadow in the industry. Richard Beckinsale became a household name in England as a star of numerous British TV comedies in the 1970s, but died tragically at the age of 31. Beckinsale says she tried to steer clear of anything that would invite comparisons to him, leading to early dramatic roles in period pieces such as "Emma."

"On this movie I actually turned a year older than my father got to [be], and it was a very liberating moment," Beckinsale says. "I made it to 32 and I'm in a comedy and everyone's being really nice. I wasn't away from the family because we shot in L.A. and it was just like a blissful and lovely sort of blossoming moment for me."

Speaking of special moments, Sandler's character in "Click" uses a super-powered remote control which can pause, rewind and fast-forward time around the person using it. Is there any specific time of her life Beckinsale would rewind too?

"God, I'm British. It's all been such abject misery," she says. "I probably would go back to when my daughter was really a small baby and I knew in advance that I wasn't going to accidentally sit on her and bust her."

Suggestion: Neurotic dramas aren't even working for Woody Allen these days, Kate. Keep branching out and Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Sarah Jessica Parker might have some new competition.

"Click" opens nationwide on June 23.
