Like most movie actresses, as Catherine Zeta-Jones gets older, her opportunities
for potentially lucrative romantic comedies are probably going to dwindle. But
she isn't giving up yet. Although she's had limited box office success with
rom-coms such as "Intolerable Cruelty" and "No Reservations," according to the Hollywood Reporter,
Zeta-Jones has just agreed to star in director Bart Freundlich's new untitled laugher.
The new flick will find Zeta-Jones playing a single New York mom who becomes
the object of affection of a 25-year-old man. The story is intriguingly similar
to the 38-year-old Freundlich's own relationship with his wife, 47-year-old
actress Julianne Moore. And, of course, the 38-year-old
Zeta-Jones (can I see a birth certificate?) is married to the 63-year-old Michael Douglas. The movie sounds like it will take
the point of view that love can span generations, but it also seems eerily
similar to the Uma Thurman flick "Prime" from a few years ago. Notably, the younger man has not
yet been cast.
As for Zeta-Jones, the actress has taken a break recently. She completed
production on Gillian Armstrong's intriguing "Death Defying Acts" more than a year ago (and still no U.S.
release date), but has been spending most of her time with her family in
Bermuda.
Freundlich became an indie darling more than a decade ago with "The Myth of Fingerprints," but his most recent flick, "Trust the Man," was a major disappointment. Tackling this
May-December romance may recharge his creative batteries when it begins filming
next month.
