On "SNL," Farley specialized in a brand of comedy that he described crudely
but accurately as "Fatty Falls Down." It was hilarious, of course, in an "oh my
god I hope he doesn't get hurt" kind of way. The question was how it would wear
in a starring role in a ... morefull-length motion picture. Despite the fond memories
many fans have of him, the results were mixed. Sure, "Tommy Boy" was a lowbrow hit, but other efforts like "Black Sheep" and "Beverly Hills Ninja" were iffy at best. His final
effort, "Almost Heroes," an explorer comedy with Matthew Perry (?!), was painfully unfunny and makes one
wonder where his career would have gone. Still, Farley makes the list because of
the fervent support his die-hard fans maintain after his tragic early death.
He's the James Dean of overweight physical comedians who get laughs
by crashing through tables. (L. Shine/Retna Ltd.) Close | |
