Black Pearl" (2003): Quick, name Johnny Depp's first Oscar nomination. That's right, it took
the most commercial role of his career for the Academy to recognize him. Buried
under kerchief, blousy shirt, and the makeup of a heavy-metal... more fashion victim,
Depp bobs and weaves his way through the big, busy Jerry Bruckheimer production
as if he stumbled in from his own private movie. His high-seas
con-man-with-a-heart-of-tarnished-stolen-gold keeps the swashbuckling adventure
delightfully off-balance as he mumbles, stumbles and sways like a punch-drunk
fighter navigating an obstacle course. Depp confessed that he partially modeled
the performance on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who returned the favor with a
cameo as Sparrow's father in the third installment of the "Pirates"
trilogy. (Buena Vista Pictures)
