2. "Beyond the Sea" (2004):
Though viewed as a disaster by many critics, "Beyond the Sea" is nevertheless
endlessly fascinating, notably because of Spacey's almost bizarre performance. A
labor of love for Spacey (who directed the picture), the biopic tells the story
of famed ... more singer, hoofer and actor Bobby Darin with an obsession and narcissism that
pays off -- albeit in ways, perhaps, Spacey may not have intended. An odd cross
between a sweet, well-intentioned biopic and a dark, self-centered Bob Fosse
confession (a la "All That Jazz"), "Beyond the Sea" just oozes Kevin Spacey --
ego-fueled, corny yet effectively chilly and, in certain sequences, dazzling
entertaining. Going through the major stages of Darin's life, Spacey sings all
of Darin's songs himself with a gusto that's intriguingly naked. This is about
Darin, for sure, but also Spacey, the actor and his dream. (Lionsgate
