Nas documentary lands huge global deal at Cannes

Rapper Nas' new documentary has become a big hit at the Cannes Film Festival in France after landing a global distribution deal.

North American rights for "Nas - Time is Illmatic" were snapped up by Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film company earlier this month after it debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. And now the movie, directed by multimedia artist One9, has sold to Japan, Australia and across Europe.  Executives at Submarine picked up the distribution deal on Tuesday.

The film centers on the release of Nas' 1994 debut album, "Illmatic," which is considered by many to be one of the most important hip-hop records of all time.

I remember copping Illmatic on its original release date back in April of 1994.  I bought the cassette tape.  Yes, millenials, those rectangular objects with the brown reel that sometimes broke from overuse. "I let my tape rock til my tape popped."  Yeah, that's a Biggie quote, but it's appropriate.  But here's a Nas one from the opening track of Illmatic, "NY State of Mind,"... "never put me in your box if your shyt eats tapes."  I remember each line of that opening track literally making my skin crawl as I listened to it in my Sony walkman while walking in the mall away from the record store after I just bought it.  Easily a top 5 hip hop album all time and should be a top 100 rock album of all time period.  Nas is the greatest.
