Rachel Bilson speaks out against 'The Bling Ring'

Real-life Bling Ring victim Rachel Bilson has spoken out against Sofia Coppola's decision to "glorify" the celebrity burglaries in a new film, branding the move "weird" and "upsetting."

The actress was among a number of stars, including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Orlando Bloom, whose homes were targeted by a gang of young thieves between 2008 and 2009. The case of the celebrity burglar bunch inspired Coppola's new film "The Bling Ring," starring Emma Watson and featuring victim Hilton in a cameo role. However, Bilson, who reportedly lost her mother's engagement ring in the break-in, insists she doesn't agree with the decision to make the movie.

She tells Britain's Cosmopolitan magazine, "I thought it was weird to glorify something that was so upsetting for a lot of people. It's important to detach from material things, but the special, personal things I lost are hard to forget." Bilson testified during the trial of real-life gang members and revealed the burglary left her so scared, she couldn't sleep in her bedroom for weeks afterwards. She said, "It took me a while to feel comfortable staying there. I wouldn't sleep in my bedroom for about a month. And I was convinced that I needed to sell my house and get out of there, because I was very scared. But I'm still there."

Hollywood glorifies all sorts of cultural decay and phenomena. I guess it's different when it's about YOU, though, isn't it? Suddenly it's "upsetting" and not just art... Funny how empathy and sense of decorum only strike people when it's convenient and close to home (literally).

I always wondered since the news of the robberies broke-how so many wealthy people didn't have alarms systems, or they weren't set on the days of the break-ins. I live in a middle-class, relatively low crime area but husband and I always put our alarm system on when leaving the house. Why didn't these celebs do the same with all the expensive stuff they have in their mansions?????

Grow up! They make movies about Rapes, Murders, Genocides, and Pedophiles ( male and female). What makes these people think that their personal experience should be sacred. Just be glad that the story wasn't about a much worse crime committed on your person. A ring can be replaced; however, your life is one of a kind.

I heard other victims cried about the movie too.  It is a really odd thing to make a movie of ... and glorify these scum of society.  Like SPRING BREAK or PAIN AND GAIN ... just dark and gross.  Of course, it's Hollywood that wants us to all think that blowing people away is normal and homosexuality is normal and drug addiction are normal.  ONLY normal in Hollywoodland where there are unicorns and ferries.
