Disney bosses are planning to expand the "Star Wars" franchise by releasing spin-off movies focusing on fans' favorite characters.

George Lucas sold his Lucasfilm company to the media giant last year, and producers are currently working on the seventh installment of the sci-fi series, "Star Wars: Episode VII," which will be released in 2015.
Disney boss Robert Iger says, "We are working on a few stand-alone films, derived from great 'Star Wars' characters that are not part of the overall saga."
J.J. Abrams has been hired to direct the first Disney-produced feature, which will be penned by "The Empire Strikes Back" writer Lawrence Kasdan.
