Billy Crystal, Bette Midler want comedic Oscars category

Veteran entertainers Billy Crystal and Bette Midler are urging producers behind the Oscars to acknowledge comedic actors by launching a new awards category.

In the early years, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences execs split nominations for Best Director and Best Original Score into separate groups for either drama or comedy, but the latter category was eventually dropped.

Find: Who's hosting the Oscars this year?

Almost all actors receiving a nod in a supporting or leading role are mentioned for their contributions to serious works, and Crystal is now calling on organizers to designate a division just for the industry's funny men and women, who hardly ever get noticed during awards season.

He tells, "I mean, the Golden Globes has it [a comedy category]. I just think it should be recognized more. There have been some amazing comedic performances that just don't [get] considered. I mean... [look at] Steve Martin in 'All of Me'."

And his "Parental Guidance" co-star Midler agrees, adding, "What about Eddie Murphy in' Nutty Professor'? I mean, my God! Who has ever done that? That was amazing!"

The problem with the Oscars is the Academy. It's a bunch of political elitists who look down on people outside a particular group of genres.

Look how long it took a fantasy movie (Return of the King) to win Best Picture.

Beauty and the Beast becomes the first traditionally animated film to be nominated for Best Picture, and the very next year they change the format to ensure that it can never happen again.

How many actors have thoroughly deserved an Oscar nomination, only to be snubbed because of some long-standing grudge between them and the Academy?

The entire culture of the Academy itself will need to be changed before the Oscars stop being such a joke.

I don't mind if more categories are added.  My problem with award shows is all the dumb drivel in between the actual presentations.  Get rid of the stupid skits and the presenters who banter back and forth "trying" to be funny!  This would make a 4 1/2 hour long show into a 2 hour show and more tolerable.

Woody Allen is just about the only "comedic" artist ever recognized for his work by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has actually even spun off the "sciences" portion of the awards to a different night because the recipients lacked the glamor of those in the arts.  Why not spin that "Comedy Category" back into the Oscars and give some talent those "golden boys" that are long overdue?

I haven't seen a comedy out of Hollywood in many, many years that I could even nominate for an Oscar. They depend on slimy humor and sex rather than great writing, funny situations and wonderful acting of previous generations. Give us something to compare with "Some Like It Hot". "What's Up, Doc" or some of the good British comedies like "The Full Monty".
