Matt Damon has given fans of the "Bourne" films hope he will return to the franchise after revealing he plans to sit down with director pal Paul Greengrass and plot his most famous character's future.
The actor turned down the chance to star in a fourth film and Jeremy Renner took over the lead in what became blockbuster hit "The Bourne Legacy" earlier this year -- but Damon says he might not be done with Jason Bourne just yet.
And even though he feels producers may have "taken the Bourne series out back and shot it in the head" with the plotline of the latest film, the actor is still interested in exploring another installment.
He tells Playboy magazine, "I love the character, and the three movies we did, so I'd love to figure out a way to do another one. I'm going to talk to Paul Greengrass about it."
But he doubts a new film would bring him and Renner together: "I don't see those characters teaming up with anybody." Damon also admits he still hasn't seen "The Bourne Legacy" -- but he plans to.
He adds, "Jeremy Renner is a terrific actor. I love everything he does. I have not seen the movie yet, but it isn't in protest or anything. When it came out last summer, I was filming a movie about Liberace right up to the end of August. We then had to rush back to New York, where we live, so we could get the kids settled and into school."
"Bourne : Legacy" was a thrilling film. I quite enjoyed both actors' portrayals of the Ludlum character(s). Ludlum's original series in his novels did not connect like they did in the films. This would enable plenty of good storylines for decent writers to create for both Damon, should Matt decide to come back, and for Renner, who did a superb job in his character. If handled properly, this could very well turn into the American version of James Bond.
It would be very interesting to see a story where the two work in parallel, but not in tandem : intersecting targets or plots which have them both in the same city at the same time, but not meeting.
I love each of the Bourne films and give kudos to each actors character. Let us remember that Matt is Jason Bourne while Jeremy is another character who is 'the next evolution' of the experiment that created Jason. Details of what Jason Bourne endured to become his persona have not been fully revealed so any DNA alteration is a mystery. I think that as long as Matt continues as Jason then we should see him evolve as he ages. Making a movie every 2 years (if Matt want to) should give Matt 6 movies before closing the curtain on the character. Jeremy also has an opportunity to continue for many years in his character. How about a movie every 2 years alternating between each character so each actor has a break to wow us with their depth in other characters and movies? Alternating characters could allow each actor to continue into their late 50's should they desire. Another Bond? I do not think the story line for Bourne would allow new actors to take over the helm because Jason is not a spy like Bond. A good franchise is hard to end but hopefully hollywood does the right thing by making something we can enjoy for decades to come without letting us see each character get run into the earth. I do believe both characters would need to come together just once to take on the epitone of what Treadstone started as it would seem it would take both characters to take on the villian (who says he died?) that is supposed to be the 'six million dollar man'' of the experiment and win.
