Elijah Wood forms horror movie company

Actor Elijah Wood is indulging his love of horror movies by setting up a production company dedicated to making scary films. The "Lord of the Rings" star has teamed up with producer Josh C. Waller and writer Daniel Noah to form The Woodshed, an independent production company focusing on frightening features.

Wood says he decided to create the company to help bring more horror movies to moviegoers. He tells Deadline.com, "I've been a fan of horror and genre cinema in general since I was a child and have become increasingly passionate about the idea of there being a space in which horror films that take their subject matter and characters seriously could be produced. What was born out of a conversation of our mutual love for the genre and what we felt was lacking in a broad sense, especially from the U.S. market, became The Woodshed."

Wood's production company is currently working on a number of creepy projects, including zombie movie "Curse the Darkness" and paranormal thriller "Henley."

The horror genre in movies usually never gets a fair shot.  Mostly its due to Hollywood going for either comedic or shock and gore (aka gore porn).  Lately though, they've been hamstringing the idea of the horror movie with the tame PG-13 rated "thrillers" with 'jump out and say BOO' scares to appeal to a larger teen-based demographic (read max profit for sub-par movie making and low budget).  I'm hoping that if more actors like Wood get involved in the independent side, you'll see a lot more classy horror films that legitimately scare and don't over produce/over sequel-ize a good idea (Paranormal Activity, Saw, etc).

I always dug him. Now I dig him more. He is so right--we need more good horror movies that take it seriously. When they started taking a comedic turn with the Child's Play movies, I was mortified.

I think he would make a better villian, i.e. Sin City.  I agree, most "horror" movies are just slasher flicks.  My favorites in the last 20 years are The Others and The Ring, both scary and suspenseful, but not full of blood and guts.

That's awesome, glad to see someone taking horror seriously.  Big fan of both Elijah and the genre.
