The script will be written by the play's author Lynn Nottage, while Winfrey will serve as executive producer, reports Deadline.com.
It was announced in October that Winfrey, who last appeared onscreen in the 1998 drama "Beloved," will return to acting with a new movie alongside Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep.
