"Paul Blart: Mall Cop"
Despite the apparent stigma of a January release date, the month does often
roll out a hefty number of prestige titles -- but in name only, with awards
contenders hitting limited release sometime in December in order to qualify for
year-end kudos, with their official "wide" releases coming whole weeks later in
January. And that's why a look at the top-earning January releases seems so much
more star-studded than it actually is, with titles like "A Beautiful Mind," "Chicago" and "Gran Torino" seemingly rounding out the top three.
Wrong. The true winner? "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," which opened on Jan. 16,
2009, and made a staggering $146.3 million at the U.S. box office. Even more
stunning? It's not even Kevin James' biggest hit: That's "Hitch," which opened
in February of 2005 and made $179.5 million (at least that one had Will Smith in
it).
