With the release of 'Jack Reacher,' here's a look back at our favorite
cinematic one-man armies

"Jack Reacher" stars Tom Cruise as an ex-military policeman who now
travels America, using his highly specialized skills to repair injustices and
crack skulls. Based on the best-selling thriller novels by Lee Child, Reacher's
an established fictional character in print, and now that he's on-screen, he's
joining a similar group of solo tough guys who do what they do on their own, and
do it well. We thought we'd put together a rogues' gallery of similar
I-do-it-my-way male leads — knowing full well that we could easily put together
a similar list of wild, wicked and whup-you tough women — who have given some of
their best performances as the solo, strong, occasionally morally ambiguous and
usually silent-but-violent characters who drive some classic thrillers and
action films.
